The Last Commute

It was an ordinary Thursday morning—at least, it started that way. In a sleek, minimalist office high above the city skyline, Jenna was staring at her coffee cup. Her commute had been... well, nonexistent. A few seconds ago, she'd been in her kitchen, fighting with a stubborn blender. Now, she was seated in her sleek, modern office chair, staring out at the view of the bustling metropolis below.

"Did I miss something?" Jenna murmured to herself, rubbing her eyes.

It wasn’t the coffee making her dizzy; it was the fact that she had just used the TelePorter, SpaceX's newly unveiled device that allowed instantaneous relocation. Elon Musk had announced it a few weeks ago during a live-streamed event, promising that within months, "the world would be smaller, and your commute would be a thing of the past."

Jenna had been skeptical. Everyone was. But today, it was real. She’d stood in her living room, tapped a few buttons on her smartphone, and—whoosh—she was here. At work. Without the annoyance of traffic, the smell of smog, or the overcrowded subway.

Her phone buzzed. It was a notification from her friend, Mark.

“Tested the TelePorter today. Made it to Paris. One click. No jet lag. WTF is going on?”

Jenna smiled and typed back. “I just teleported to work. No more morning rush hour. It’s like magic.”

Mark responded almost instantly. “I’ll be in Tokyo for lunch. Be right back.”

Jenna laughed out loud. “You’re kidding, right?”

“Watch me,” he replied, with a cheeky emoji.

People had expected some glitches when the device was first launched—maybe a few missteps, wrong turns, or a case of someone ending up in a random place. But no. The TelePorter worked flawlessly. People were already using it to skip across continents, pop in and out of meetings, and avoid awkward goodbyes at parties. You could visit your favorite restaurant in Italy during your lunch break and still make it back in time for dinner at home. Travel was no longer a burden; it was just another click of the button.

But Jenna’s boss, Mark Stevens, wasn’t so sure about this new technology. The next meeting was supposed to discuss team expansion and budgets, but instead, it was a demonstration of how the TelePorter could change their entire business model.

“I don’t know, people,” Mark said, tapping his pen nervously. “We’ve built our entire structure around people being physically present. The value of face-to-face interaction. If people can just zap to anywhere, how do we maintain presence?”

Jenna leaned back in her chair. "Mark, don't be so old-fashioned. You can still be present. Just... at your destination, instantly."

Mark frowned. "But it feels wrong, doesn’t it? Like, where do we draw the line? Next thing you know, no one’s going to show up for work anymore."

Jenna smirked. "Well, with the TelePorter, I don’t think anyone has to 'show up' anywhere. We’re all already there."

The room fell silent.

"Imagine this," Jenna continued. "You can go home every night for dinner, and still attend global conferences at the same time. No jet lag. No time zones. Just... endless possibilities."

Her words hung in the air. Mark was processing, like everyone else. But the wheels of change had already begun turning. If you could be anywhere at any time, the concept of “location” itself became irrelevant. Work, leisure, socializing—all of it could be done in any combination, instantaneously.

As the meeting wrapped up, Jenna stood up, tapping her phone screen once more. She clicked her heels, and in a blink, she was no longer in the office. She was sitting in her favorite coffee shop by the beach, latte in hand, watching the waves crash against the shore.

Mark’s voice crackled over her comm device. "I hate you. But you're right. This is the future."

Jenna took a sip of her coffee, watching a family walk by. They stopped for a moment, and the father glanced at her with a confused look.

“Didn’t you just—?”

Jenna smiled. "Welcome to the future. Welcome to SpaceX's new world. No more commutes."

With the TelePorter, it wasn’t just about skipping traffic anymore. It was about redefining what it meant to live in a world without boundaries. No traffic jams. No layovers. No missed flights. Just one click, and you were where you needed to be.

And Jenna? She’d already booked a quick trip to the moon for her lunch break. Why not?
